2014 Lost Eden Christmas Hunt

Lost Eden ran a well received Christmas Hunt last year (2013) and we are running a Christmas Hunt this year.

The Hunt will begin on the 1st December 2014, and continue until the 24th December 2014.

Last year we used a Candy Cane as the item you had to find, this year we will be using a Christmas stocking.

The hunt will be open to anyone in Second-Life who can access an Adult rated sim, with the exception of child avatars.

The hunt will start at the Lost Eden Landing point where you can pick-up the "clues note-card". The Christmas Stockings will be hidden all across the sim and public access areas and I will lead you on a merry chase.

Some Well Earned R and R

What do you do top relax in SecondLife? I found my new relaxation through a friend in SL, she said "lets go shoot some zombies". Ok I thought, blast a few rounds off and chill.

That was the start of a unique and addicting experience. A few years ago now, I built and ran a place called Zombie Forest, three levels of shooting zombies on a quarter of a mainland sim. It was something to do.

Urban City Zombies is a full sim and run by Klatu Resident and it really is a full on zombie shooting experience.

Klatu has three levels of zombie killing, from the mundane (easy), to the airport (Intermediate) and Fort Urban - his latest build at sim level, just getting out of the bunker in the center is a challenge.

It is not for the faint hearted and you can expect to get infected a lot, if you have the score keeper HUD, and die, you will lose points. Yet as Klatu himself says "If you ain't dying you ain't trying".

Now if knitting is your idea of relaxation, then keep away, but if you want to try some hard-core zombie shooting and have some fun at the same time, then drop by and give it a try. I dare you!!!!

The picture doesn't do the place justice, but it is worth a visit, and it is worth exploring the entire sim, but the Firebase build on the sim level is "Hell on Earth" and not for the faint hearted.

A Little Piece Of Egypt

Lost Eden is a complex SecondLife Sim that has been around since 2007. It is well thought out and planned, I don't say that because I happen to volunteer my time there, it is a fact.

The sim is currently undergoing a refurbishment phase and that is a challenge. To renew or replace elements of the sim while still keeping the sim open to our regulars and guests.

Fancy a little piece of Egypt, gaze at the moving Nile as you explore the newly refurbished gaming area.

A Slice Of Egypt

The aim of the build was to create a warm inviting location, with a touch of history, the Egyptian textures and props were chosen with care and consideration for our regulars and guests. I think we have hit the mark on this build, but you can decide for yourself.

The build was reduced from a massive 100 x 100 footprint, to a 64 x 64 foot print, so it doesn't seem like you have walked into a gaping cavern, more like a newly discovered Lost Egyptian tomb.

There are the usual casino type games and the ever popular Greedy. So - drop by and check us out, you will find Lost Eden in the book (Second-life Search).

Lost Eden Gets A New Teleport Centre

It may not sound like big news, yet it is. Lost Eden has a new teleport centre, it is a roman build and blends in better with the dock area.

The Teleport prims are larger and easier to read, you don't have to stand on top of them to see where each one takes you.

Where Have ALL the LIndens Gone

So Rod Humble has allegedly resigned as the CEO of Linden Lab, yet the Lab has yet to officially tell the SecondLife Community.

Phillip Rosendale, the creator of SecondLife is MIA (Missing In Action), reportedly working on a new virtual world. Phillip doesn't show on the Board of Directors of Linden Lab, yet I bet he still owns Linden Lab, that is a guess by the way, not a certainty.

Phillip doesn't show up in SecondLife people search, yet I can still find him in search.

The Abuse Report system is broken and the griefers know it. Live Chat is pretty much a waste of time, they ALWAYS tell you to file an abuse report, I guess they read that information from a pre-prepared card. If you are lucky you will get connected to a decent Scout who actually knows what to do, but that is a rare occasion. Submit a support ticket and they will tell you to submit a Abuse Report, though to be fair, sometimes you do actually get a result.

So the big question is; where is ALL the money going that residents pour into SecondLife via tiers and spending within this shrinking virtual world.

Even though Phillip is MIA, he is still accountable for Linden Lab and SecondLife, make no mistake about that.

A bigger question is; "Can it be turned around", and the answer is "Yes it can", but at some cost to the Lab, and that is where the crunch comes in.

The majority of major companies found out the hard way that resourcing off-shore was a bad move and are slowly bringing business back home where it belongs. A person based in India, for example, has no idea what is happening at the front line, and whilst they may be cheap labour, cheap labour is no guarantee of quality service.

Everything comes down to how tight the outsourcing contract is, and if anyone actually keeps an eye on the performance of the off-shore workers. Clearly the Lab is not doing that.

How can this be solved? - Easily, with a little bit of good planning and improved management tactics.

Hire people who know about SecondLife, hire residents that have participated actively in this virtual world, people who know what is expected of sensible residents and can apply the terms of service fairly and without bias.

By all means hire all the tech specialists you need to keep SecondLife ticking along, but the front-line staff need to know about this virtual world.

If you read this Phillip, feel free to contact me.

I am in the SecondLife Register somewhere.

In the meantime, the residents of SecondLife are under siege from lack of solid community service and public relations from the Lab. Only time will tell if Linden Lab is serious about keeping this virtual world and rectifying the basic problems that have existed for a long time.

Why Can't I Behave How I Want on Adult Sims

Linden Lab created Maturity Ratings for SecondLife, they can be read at the link below:

What Linden Lab don't tell you and they don't tell you a lot, is that when a person buys a sim off them, and pays a monthly tier of $300 US dollars, that gives the sim owners lots of rights on how they elect to manage their sim, and Linden Lab will not interfere.

So while a region maybe listed as adult, the sim owner can demand and expect levels of behaviour that may seem unfair or restrictive given the Lab Maturity ratings.

So You Have a Business and Want Traffic?

So you have just started a business and want traffic right now. I wish it was that easy, but it isn't. It takes time to build traffic and a customer base. So lets start with some basics.

Use the tools that Linden Lab provide. Advertise YOUR place on the community events web-page. Its easy. Log in to the SL main web-page. On the left hand side you will see "Event". Click on it.

You will be taken to the next screen shot. Click the Submit New Event hot link. That takes you to an agreement, read the agreement, and if you agree with it, click the agree button

After you have agreed to the posting rules, you will be taken to the area where you "Post" your event.

Fill out ALL the fields, be precise, tell your audience what the event is. When you have done all that, press the "Save Event" button and you will be taken to the ad you just placed.

Its that easy.

What else can you do?

Lost Eden Local

Lost Eden has its fair share of locals that like to hang out there from their normal work location, each has their own personality and brand of humour.

This is how one of the "locals" gets her tan during the winter months. Moral of this post, don't go "AFK" (Away from the keyboard).

Community Standards

As a Grid Mentor, I get asked a lot of questions about SecondLife, most I can answer, some I cannot. Nobody in SL knows it all, but I do have access to a lot of Mentor groups and can usually find information I am looking for. The fall back position is asking Linden Lab.

Lost Eden abides by the Terms of Service. The ToS is the higher document in SL and various other policies and guidelines sit under the ToS. such as the Community Standards.

The goals of the Community Standards are simple: treat each other with respect and without harassment, adhere to local standards as indicated by simulator ratings, and refrain from any hate activity which slurs a real-world individual or real-world community.

Being Adult and Swearing

Recently, Senior Management at Lost Eden, sent out the following note card through their rather large group. It goes like this:

"Good Day Edenites:

We seem to be having an age old problem with bad language, and crude chat and innuendo in the Landing Dock Area, and I feel I need to explain why we don't allow it.

As new visitors land in Lost Eden, the last thing anyone wants to walk into is loud rude and foul mouthed language. It can be very intimidating for some and offending to others. Its where the first impressions are made of our sim, and its not how we wish to be seen.

An Interview with - Firey Indigo

1. What is your SecondLife Name?

Firey Indigo.

2. How long have you been a active participant in SecondLife?

Seven years .

3. How did you find out about SecondLife?

My daughter told me about it, and introduced me to building which i love.

4. Why do you volunteer your time at Lost Eden?

Because I felt that SecondLife was missing something special for people who were adult but wanted romance and somewhere special to spend their time that was not sleazy or nasty .. but fun,  friendly, with a great community spirit, plus  private places for those who could not afford homes to meet with their friends or love.

Their are many sim's in SecondLife, but so many are geared to men and to sex and I wanted to see somewhere women felt at home and men also but with a more elegant romantic and friendly atmosphere where they could  enjoy a more romantic relationship and friendships, without feeling pressured or embarrassed.

Eden was created to fill that gap a wonderful romantic place for adults with many private places and people running it who cared about the sim and not about profits.

The rules are simple but kept strictly and the 24 thousand members seem to love the fact Lost Eden is unique friendly, adult and elegant that you can dance everywhere, cuddle dream, find  love, friends and enjoy yourself  in a truly romantic atmosphere.

DJ Toby Velvetleaf Rocks Eden

DJ Toby Velvetleaf is Lost Eden's resident DJ and he holds weekly gigs at many spots around Lost Eden, such as the Solstice Circle.

Toby is the ultimate DJ and plays a good mix of music and mixes that he compiles, so when you get a chance, drop down to Lost Eden on any Thursday night (Friday night in Australia) and check out the music Toby spins.

Griefers and SL and You

I wrote this article a few months ago on my main blog.

What does a griefer look like?

Look around, look at the person next to you, a griefer doesn't come with any defined look, nor do they wear a big sign that says "Griefer". The age of an avatar does not necessarily make them a griefer, whilst it is true that griefers make disposable accounts, there will be older residents that have griefed in SL and are still around.

A griefer is a player who does things in a game to deliberately cause annoyance ("grief" in the sense of "giving someone grief") for their own enjoyment. Such players are a particular nuisance in online gaming communities, since they often cannot be deterred by penalties related to in-game goals. The term originated in the early 1990s, when online games were growing in popularity.

How Do You Find Lost Eden Staff?

When you arrive at Lost Eden you land in what is locally called "The Dock". The dock is the welcoming area and folks seem to congregate around it, at one end is a small dance area, there are many dance areas all around the island, hidden away, all you have to do is find them.

At the other end of the dock is the teleport board that will take you to the public sky boxes and various attractions at sim level. From here you can also access the private member skyboxes, providing you are a member of Lost Eden of course.

It costs 100 Lindens to join the Lost Eden group, a small price to pay for the private members facilities.

Across from the dock is the sim store, near the sim store is a staff contact board that shows you which staff are on line.

Touch the picture of the Staff Member you wish to contact, and follow the prompts you will receive on your screen.

The Lost Eden Secret Cave

It seems that some folks in the Lost Eden Christmas Hunt are having a hard time finding:

CLUE 15

Protruding from ancient rock within a cave.

Which is not surprising given we found this long forgotten place when I was walking around the sim one day and literally fell into it. So Look for the sign as shown below.

and walk straight through it.
